My kids and I love the You Wouldn't Want To series. If you are unfamiliar with these titles, they mix historical detail with delightful humor and charming cartoon-style illustrations.

This book focuses on Shackleton's ill-fated arctic expedition. His ship got trapped in the ice for months, and then crushed and sunk.
