Pandalus Danae, Coonstripe Shrimp
A Review of the Biology and Recommended Assessment Framework for Directed FisheriesMicroform - 2001
This paper begins with descriptions of the biology of Pandalid shrimp in general and coonstripe shrimp, Pandalus danae, in particular. It then reviews coonstripe shrimp fisheries and their respective management regimes throughout the Pacific north-west in the United States & Canada, focussing on British Columbia trap & trawl fisheries. This is followed by discussion of coonstripe shrimp fishery & management issues, including overfishing, regulatory approaches to management, size & effort limits, area/time closures, by-catch & collateral damage, resource allocation, management & survey costs, and data requirements. Finally, recommendations are provided regarding the establishment of directed coonstripe shrimp fisheries in British Columbia.
