I've seen most of Fassbinder's films. I would agree with critical consensus that this one's at the top of the pack, and that it's an entertaining film.
The story's not terribly pointed, but the writer/director's empathy with his characters, and his ability to put their point of view across, is masterful. This is high art, delivered in a melodramatic format, at a low budget.

Classic. A very human story, entertaining through and through.

It may be a style of film making but this is flat and one-dimensional. The acting is wooden and lacking in subtlety even though the racial tensions which form the basis for the film are certainly an accurate mirror of 1970's Germany and even more so today with the influx of migrants and, one might say, of many places in the world.

bad boy director Fassbinder softens his approach and makes a film inspired by All the Heaven Allows adding differences in race to those of age and social status.
