This paper is a literature review of all available & relevant information on past & present data concerning the California mussel & related species for the purposes of establishing a California mussel fishery in British Columbia. The paper first provides information on the biology of the California mussel, including its taxonomy, geographic distribution, life history, parasites & diseases, trophic relations, population structure & dynamics, and ecological relationships. It then reviews the commercial California mussel fishery in Oregon & California and the unregulated fishery in British Columbia. This is followed by discussion of the additional information required for assessment & management of a California mussel fishery and the possible protocol & methods for mussel fishery management. Finally, recommendations for further steps in the development of a British Columbia fishery for the California mussel are listed.
