Salmon StocksMicroform - 2002
This report reviews salmon stock status & trends for British Columbia as a whole, as well as the relevant fisheries management issues associated with determining stock status. It begins with a discussion of biological diversity in salmon, the stock concept & its scientific uncertainties, and how these issues relate to sustainable fisheries management. It then describes the methods that Fisheries & Oceans Canada uses to assess abundance & productivity, and to establish spawning stock & exploitation goals. This is followed by a broad species-by species overview of stock status & trends and a review of the issues involved in harvest regulation, with a focus on the compromises that occur in balancing fisheries production, biodiversity protection, and setting allocation goals. Finally, the report discusses the benefits & pitfalls associated with developing alternative strategies for rebuilding weak stocks and ensuring sustainable harvest management.
