The story of the transition of a woman who has experienced unfathomable loss. We follow with her the baby steps she takes to evolve into a different yet very satisfactory life. I would recommend it.

It snowed. Betta shovelled it. She made some phone calls. She ate—a number of times and different things. Elizabeth Berg’s The Year of Pleasures paints vivid pictures of all things real and imagined in the life of her grieving widow. To what end, I am scratching my head. If there is a story here, I’m afraid I missed it.

My year would have been much more pleasant without this sad read.

This author is a master of small details that capture a moment in time. I also like how each of her characters is flawed but likeable, especially the heroine. The final result is a deep but not depressing picture of one widow's attempt at reclaiming her life after the loss of a beloved partner. Very real, and personal but still universal.
