Strait of Georgia Coho Salmon Resource Status and Management Planning Process
Interim ReportMicroform - 1991
A decline in stocks of wild coho salmon in the Strait of Georgia has prompted the Department of Fisheries & Oceans to initiate a consultative planning process for rebuilding these stocks. This interim report summarizes the results of the first set of workshops conducted as part of this process, outlines the management options identified to date for rebuilding coho stocks, and provides preparation material for the second set of workshops. The first set of workshops included a Department presentation on the status of the coho stocks, stock enhancement objectives, coho habitat status & restoration initiatives, and coho fisheries & management measures; reactions from Native, sport, & commercial fishery advisors; a Department presentation on fisheries management models; an evaluation of the Johnstone Strait net fishery; and identification & evaluation of fishery management options.
