Watch this movie in German, don't even bother with the English dubbing.

But I would like to add that this film is a must see for WW2 buffs. I know some of the acting and fighting scenes aren't exactly "Saving Private Ryan", but I like seeing the Germans perspective of the war. This film really shows the corruption of those in charge in the German army, and the harsh environment they had to fight in. The scene that really stood out was when German soldiers tried to save a Russian boy.

The film is a bit long, and dragged on a lot during the middle hence why I only gave 3.5 stars.

This is a 1993 war drama directed by Joseph Vilsmaier.
A group of German soldiers enjoy leave in Cervo, Liguria, Italy after fighting in North Africa.
Then they are transferred to Russia, where they ultimately find themselves participants in the Battle of Stalingrad.
The film's epilogue gives some stark statistics for the Battle for Stalingrad.
More than a million people were killed in action, starved or froze to death.
Out of the Sixth Army's 260,000 men, 91,000 were taken prisoner.
Out of those, only 6,000 returned home years later.
I think this battle was the most pitifull and foolish battle of all Hitler had commanded.

The same comments appear for both the 1996 German film and the 2014 Russian film. They are two different films!

A wonderful European war movie. Don't go into this expecting some Hollywood blockbuster akin to Saving Private Ryan. No big explosions or Die Hard-esque action scenes. This is exactly what it sounds like, a European war film depicting the battle of Stalingrad from the perspective of the average German trooper. Will be very enjoyable to the average history buff or if you're familiar with Euro cinema

8.5/10

It was OK. The dubbing was terrible with the voices the choose. Really ruined the movie.
