Grizzly Bear Harvest Management in British Columbia

Background Report -- Rev

Microform - 2003
Rate this:
This report begins with prehistoric & historical background on the grizzly bear in British Columbia, including an estimate of the grizzly bear population prior to European contact and discussion of the historic factors affecting that population. It then reviews the research conducted in British Columbia since the 1970s to estimate the grizzly population, describes the population estimation method currently used, and provides a current estimate of the grizzly population with comparison to an estimate from 1990. This is followed by a review of current legislation & policy covering grizzly bear hunting and an overview of the grizzly bear harvest management procedure. Finally, the grizzly bear harvest since 1978 is analyzed, with emphasis on comparing the four years prior to the 1996 implementation of province-wide limited entry hunting (1992-95) with the four years following (1997-2000).
