I read this series twice in college. It was a satisfying mysterious, and magical fantasy. I thought there was great humor and character development.

Where is Volume 2?

This is one of my favourite series of all time and my go-to books when I have nothing else to read. I start reading in the middle of one of the books and end up reading the whole series.

It all started off so well: a good RPG-like adventure with interesting and varied characters, a grand quest, and a rich fantasy world. Then it falls apart at the end (the last two books). The main hero is nothing more than a puppet; the prophecy is all too neat; and there's no real danger or excitement at the final confrontation.

Well-written epic fantasy. Excellent starter for young readers interested in something beyond Harry Potter. Equally good for adults.

I read this when I was in High School. It is a good adventure yarn of a young boy growing up to be a hero (and king). Belgarath the sorcerer remains one of my favourite wizards in fiction. Villains were a little "evil for the sake of evil."

“In spite of everything, you still have the soul of a stone. You understand hate and loyalty and unswerving commitment, but you can't comprehend the more human feelings-- compassion, friendship, love-- love most of all, I think.”
