For those of us who grew up reading comic books, enjoying sci-fi and other geek pursuits, it's been bittersweet to watchformerly lonely adolescent boy pursuits become mainstream. Austin Grossman's debut novel is about super heroes and super villains, particularly evil genius Dr. Impossible. Initially, I thought this book would be obnoxious and pleased with itself, like "Ready Player One" and "How To Live Safely in a SF Universe." But it's quite clever and enjoyable, recalling "The Incredibles" (but more grown up) and "Watchmen" (but funnier).

A superhero tale. Well, more of a super villain tale. The book asks the question, if you are a super-genius, why would you continually try to "take over the world" when you know that some superhero is just going to swoop in, beat you up, and break your doomsday device? After the third try, you think you'd learn your lesson. Not Doctor Impossible. He's been to jail 12 times and he STILL plans to escape and take over the world. The book goes back and forth between Dr. Impossible's perspective & the newest member of the Champions(a Justice League/Avengers clone), a cyborg named Fatale. It covers all the various topics you would expect in a world with superhumans. Most of the heroes are thinly veiled versions of popular comic superheroes. A Superman-type named Corefire (super-strength, flight, invulnerability, super-senses) has gone missing and the Champions, the "world's premier super-group" reforms to find him and stop Dr. Impossible at the same time. A very interesting ending.

bham2013 This fantastic tale is told in alternating chapters from the perspective of Dr. Impossible, evil super-genius, and Fatale, aspiring superhero. Filled with complex characters and hilarious situations, this is the literary equivalent of the avengers movie - ridiculously over the top but too fun to put down. I'm not a comic book reader but I thoroughly enjoyed the intelligent writing and gleeful energy of this dissertation-procrastination.

I loved the premise of this story and especially loved the chapters from the point of view of the supervillian, Doctor Impossible. It lost itself in some of it's own details, especially when talking about the different superheroes/villians in the history of this world, but there is a glossary to help you out. There were a couple of things that were started but then sort of fizzled out, which is why I only gave this one a three out of five stars. But, in the end, I enjoyed it and would recommend it.

Alternating first-person narrative of the world's smartest super-criminal and one of it's latest super-heroes, which leads up to their cataclysmic battle. Slightly ironic throughout, this is ultimately a straight adventure tale which not only covers the criminal's latest plot to take over the world but also 70 years of history of earth's mightiest heroes. Recommended even to those who don't like comics and want a light read.

A comic book without the pictures, superheroes and evil villains and all. Austin Grossman has hit on the love of all things superhero for a generation that isn't "supposed" to read comics anymore - and so he's developed an emotional and complex story following superheroes through their regular shenanigans, but also giving us a glimpse behind the masks. Laugh out loud funny, I hope Mr. Grossman brings us more like this in the future.

Tremendous fun; very funny and emotionally deep. For a first book, this is a winner, and I eagerly await further works.
