Director Richard Attenborough passed away yesterday and I thought it only fitting to look up his movies. His very first movie from 1969 was "Oh! What a Lovely War". This is listed as a Musical Comedy with an Anti War theme. I would say it is a "black comedy musical" and a great one at that. KCLS web site has never had one patron comment on the movie in written form. We leave comments to share our ideas, reactions, and to leave whether we can recommend the movie to other patrons. "Oh, What a Lovely War" reminds me of other political musicals. You don't go around humming the soundtrack. That doesn't mean the movie is not entertaining. It will limit its audience and that is understandable. I would recommend reading such movie reviews on such film sites as Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. It is not surprising that Richard Attenborough would make his first movie an anti war musical and then move on to such a man as Gandhi. I would definitely recommend you see "Cry Freedom" and "Gandhi" before seeing "Oh, What a Lovely War". This is a special movie for a special audience!
