Author Edward Marston has created an intricate plot of ambition, greed, revenge, and broken hearts that keeps the reader engaged to the final page. The criminal activity takes place against the backdrop of the stark contrasts of the Victorian era such as sharp class structure, wide economic inequality, rapid urbanization, and challenged social and religious values. When is Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck going to propose to Madeleine Andrews? [The summary (above) is incorrect as the head is revealed on a railway station platform several weeks prior to the Derby Week horse races.]
