A pioneer of manned flight mostly unknown in the US but revered in France and his home country, Brazil. He didn't always build his machines hands-on like the Wrights because he could afford to have things made, but his imagination knew no bounds and modern aviators have a huge debt to him. He put his life on the line countless times and promoted female pilots, notably Hélène Dutrieu (a top cyclist) and was a noted pacifist who ultimately despaired because of the widespread use of aircraft in warfare.
