The book does a masterful job of depicting the immigrant experience. The reader experiences it along with the main character because the new land is so foreign to us too. It reminded me of traveling overseas and not knowing how to do the basic things (catching a bus, selecting what looked edible, etc.) and how much I depended on the kindness of strangers. Shaun Tan does this all without a single word of text!

Great graphic novel for fathers and especially immigrants to be able to relate to. All visual, this graphic novel allows you to interpret the story in different dynamic way that most people would not expect to see out of a book. Well done and well illustrated.

An absolutely extraordinary depiction of the migrant experience. A man leaves his wife and daughter behind to start a new life in a foreign country. I love how the artist depicts the strangeness of this new land--the language, buildings, technology, even the animals--and how people manage to communicate through gestures, pictures, and smiles. Each time I open this book I see something I hadn't noticed or appreciated before.
P.S. Young adults will enjoy this book but it is definitely for people of all ages!

A wordless graphic novel that the tells the familiar tale of an immigrant. By having no words, it makes the reader feel just like the immigrant who is encountering a new world to try to make a better life for his family. I breezed through the book in half an hour, only to re-open it, and look at it again. (submitted by DS)

A very interesting book showing the difficulties faced by new migrants in any country.
Great text. Definitely a must read.

A wordless story full of fanciful locations and astonishing animals, that manages to tell a very real world immigrant's tale. An excellent tool for teaching visual literacy, and a deeply heartwarming and human narrative of adapting to a new life.

This really is an amazing book. Without words, Shaun Tan tells tales about what it is to be a refugee. Why you would leave the country you love, and what it is like to be somewhere new, where everything is strange. Astonishing really. Recommended for anyone from ten or twelve up. Take some time and check this out.

This famous wordless art book illustrates the story of a young man immigrating from a dangerous war-torn country to a strange and confusing foreign land. The sepia-toned illustrations are excellent and effectively evoke strong feelings of isolation tinged with hope for a better future.
