this is an early 80's slice of life in a small town in Florida's panhandle.

in both Gates of Heaven and Vernon, Florida, the only two of his many docs I have watched so far, Morris's modis operandi was to find people willing to talk - and talk - to a stranger with a camera.

the special features interview reveals the original intention of his choice of Vernon for a doc, far from what appears here.

an acquired taste, to be sure, but my library has 8 Morris docs and I'll be watching them all, eventually.

A portrait of eccentrics in a small town. Disturbing, hilarious, hard to pin down, and worth seeing again.

This is an excellent film. It serves as a kind of ethnographic study of a secluded little town in Florida. At times you get the sense that Morris is laughing at these dumb "Backwoods" people, but the deeper the camera pierces into the town it uncovers the spirit of a people. These "backwards" folks seem like dumb jokes but in the hands of Morris they get elevated and their alleged "idiocy" becomes poetic and profoundly simple. These ugly "Rednecks" become beautiful, even if they are stupid. Its a very poetic film. Highly recommended, but not for casual movie audiences.

An early work by eclectic documentarian Errol Morris in which he attempts to take the pulse of a backwater white trash town in northern Florida. Those of you familiar with the geography will have an uncomfortable sense of déjà-vu while the rest of us will stare disbelievingly at the drawling preacher who makes an entire sermon out of the word "Therefore" (he also had to consult the dictionary to look up "conjunction"); the turkey enthusiast who views the hunt as an ongoing battle of wits (with the gobblers often coming out on top); and the incomprehensible septuagenarian who keeps possums and turtles in a makeshift pen for some reason or another. Morris' static camera and insistence that his redneck subjects completely empty their thoughts on film makes for one of the longest hours I've ever squirmed through. 'Murkah, f*ck yeah!
