Ruth Stoops is pregnant, confused and in trouble with the law for the umpteenth time. But it doesn't stop there. She soon becomes the unwitting object of a wacky tug-of-war that erupts when pro-lifers square off with pro-choicers and everyone goes to ridiculous extremes trying to claim her as a national symbol for their cause.

Citizen Ruth is a fearless film, which you will either love or hate (see comments below). But how can it be called "bad"? It's well-written, well-acted, snappily paced. It sharply observes the "culture wars" around abortion, and it's funny (see attached video). So maybe there are some other factors besides quality in those bad ratings, huh? Laura Dern has a role of a lifetime as a woman everyone ignores, neglects and despises -- until they want something out of her.

This is one of the worst movies I've ever witnessed. Payne is excellent in Election and About Schmidt but he directed a real turkey here. Dern is a totally unsympathetic character and no one could have pulled this movie out of the garbage dump of cinema.

Llaura Dern is brilliant in her portrayal of Ruth.

Ruth is a completely unloveable protaganist who, irregardless of yet another unwanted pregnancy, remains hellbent on huffing her way through life and doing whatever it takes to get to her next catatonic buzz.

Set against the cultural war of 'pro-choice' versus 'pro-life', she becomes an iconic bone of contention as both sides struggle to manipulate her as 'theirs' amid a growing media frenzy.

There is no satisfaction in this story, nor in it's ending; still worth watching.

Laura Dern does a pretty good job as Ruth Stoops, a pregnant druggie, though her performance seemed a bit shallow and two-dimensional. The biggest problem with the film, I felt, was that of tone. The screenplay (written by Payne and his sidekick Jim Taylor) tries desperately to achieve a satiric/comedic sense but that attempt seems to gradually fade away into the background as Stoops behavior continues down a dark and self-abusive path. What the viewer is ultimately left with is a pretty ugly picture of self-destruction that really isn’t very funny.

I don’t know what film the other reviewers saw, but it wasn’t this one. THIS FILM IS VERY BAD. Payne is otherwise good, but not here. Laura Dern doesn’t know how to be here. The other acting is scattered as is the style—not ‘over the top’, but ‘away from the top’, if that means anything. Probably not since there is no film so, no top. The plot is boring, the acting bad since no one has a clue what to do; all we have is fake relavance—abortion. Don’t worry, nothing about abortion here, this film is horrible, remember. ONE OF THE WORST FILMS EVER MADE. Expense account in Omaha--Hollywood don’t get any better than this!......................This movie is ‘poop in a bag’.

drama - with some comedic parts about a girl, a very determinded girl who has serious porblems and is being courted (or helped) by a whole lot of concerned people (albeit misplaced concern) for all the wrong reasons. very real life issues type of stuff.
