Hmm..... Here's a Pi-sized conundrum.

Was Pi's story really so recklessly brilliant that it almost collided with stupidity? - or - Was its story such a farce that its brilliance was only that of pretence? You know, I really can't seem to decide, either here nor there, on this matter.

If nothing else, this truly original, little, attention-getter (with its haunting soundtrack and bleached-out, 16 mm, b&w photography) certainly did take the horrors of paranoia to a whole new level of hellishness.

Like a story straight out of a Kafka-esque nightmare, Pi tells the decidedly weird tale of obsessed genius, Max Cohen, who firmly believes that the orderliness of numbers may, in fact, enable him to conquer the stock market.

At an 85-minute running time, this oddly fascinating study of madness certainly does deliver a substantial wallop that, being pretentious nonsense, or not, is sure to greatly please some viewers, while at the same time completely outrage others.

Well done for Aronofsky's first (low budget) feature film. A filmmaking talent definitely indicative of greater things to come. High-octane story; conspiracy; paranoia; o.c.d. The ending left me perplexed: Vegetable... or hallucination?

This is a good movie and very impressive if you consider the budget that Aronofsky was working with. The movie was filmed on black and white film and has a rough feeling to it. The story is good and entertaining, but it can be a bit jerky. If you love Aronofsky and you want to see some of his earlier work that he wrote and directed than Pi is a great place to start.

Yet another religious / mathematics thriller. If you ever thought that sort of thing would be boring, think again. You get so far inside the head of this researcher of statistical probabilities, the credits rolling feels like blissful relief. His mania and obsession is infectious and riveting. Watch this if you have not already done so, but you will have no need for coffee for a good 48 hours after.

"Is loneliness and isolation the usual path chosen by genius? - or - Does the rest of society inadvertantly impose it upon them as if they were a freak of nature?"
