The present state of the university is a difficult issue to comprehend for anyone outside of the education system. If we are to believe common government reports that changes in policy are somehow making life easier for university graduates, we cannot help but believe that things are going right and are getting better in our universities. Coté and Allahar (both: sociology, U. of Western Ontario) carefully analyze what they have learned from educators, counselors, administrators, educational researchers and students of the past and present. They find universities need to shift their focus back to education rather than mere credentials, that students need to learn proper educational survival tools in secondary schools, and that everyone must get over the idea that a sheepskin comes with fat paychecks attached.
