Aimed at a young adult audience, this six-volume encyclopedia individually profiles all of the 193 independent nations of the world (as well as some other political and geographic units) in articles that range from two to ten pages in length and are copiously illustrated. Each article provides overviews of the country's history, geography, economy, people, culture, and current politics. The articles typically include physical and political maps, thematic maps, fact boxes of key data, diagrams and charts, historical timelines, and photographs and other illustrations. Occasionally they also include discussion of some unique feature of the country in question--for instance, the entry on Argentina includes coverage of the gaucho way of life and the entry on Zimbabwe discusses the archaeology of the city of Great Zimbabwe, built by the Shona people circa AD 1000--but these additional materials are by no means typical. Political and physical world maps are included in the first volume and the final volume includes a comprehensive index. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
