The fascination I had about this film was the minor art of pickpocketing - its easy to get interested in something that one will not become a victim (except on foreign vacations!). Although in rather desperate straits, the main character never really tries to make an honest living, though he probably could if he put similar effort into it as he does into his crimes. The film gets progressively more exciting as the pickpocketing gets ever more elaborate and ambitious, and the relations with other characters are revealed and develop. The most interesting of these is the relationship the pickpocket has with a character that is never shown on screen at all: his mother.

Ultimately inexplicable, this concentrated, elliptical, economical movie is an experience that never loses its strangeness.

Great film from one of the masters.

A very interesting movie about a career criminal. (It is fascinating to see the methods used by the pickpockets.) However, the ending was disappointing.

Love Robert Bresson. This is a little gem of a movie of a man who finds his luck may be running out on his daily criminal ways. Recommend!

Un film un peu noir et triste.
