The first 80 pages present the Monmouth Rebellion and the dire consequences for Peter Blood when he is unjustly accused and convicted of treason. Subsequently, each chapter is a page-turner as Captain Blood's privateers encounter Spanish, French and English ships on the Caribbean Sea and its ports. A romantic sub-theme presents a strong-willed female character who almost leads to Captain Blood's downfall.

After some years of youthful adventure in France and Spain, Peter Blood settles down to practice medicine in a small town in western England. After treating a casualty of the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685, Blood is convicted of treason and shipped to Barbados as a plantation slave. The plantation is attacked by Spanish pirates which provides the opportunity for Blood and other English-born slaves to escape. As Captain Blood commanding a small fleet of privateers, a series of exploits take place over four years that demonstrate his mastery of guile, bluff and ruse as much as skill with the rapier.
