In a word, outstanding. Both the film and Sandrine Bonnaire's performance, remarkable for a seventeen-year-old in her third film. This is my first exposure to the oeuvre of Agnes Varda, and it will definitely not be my last. A story of someone who chooses to live with neither roof nor rules. Like Eric Rohmer, Varda gives us a film that fuses documentary with fiction. The film should make you feel uneasy about where our society places people and our attitudes towards them. She dies at the beginning/end of the film but without complaint or compromise. I like the fact that not everything is explained to/for us. It doesn't matter why she rises from the sea, or why she's wary of the police. This is her life, such as it is, and she lives it honestly. She dies the same way. Would that we could all say the same.

This is a fairly good movie which begins with the ending. Throughout the course of the film I had mixed feelings, but I did get to feel for the character, Mona...somewhat. It's a passable film that I think expresses the life of a female drifter in France during the mid-80s well enough.
