Adapted from the memoirs of literary critic John Bayley, the film recounts his courtship of and long marriage to British novelist Iris Murdoch. The scenario tacks back and forth from the young Iris--ready to seduce one and all with her coy command of words and sex appeal--to the elder Iris--slowly giving way to the cruel erasure of Alzheimer's.

I was attracted to this movie after hearing the beautiful soundtrack recording featuring the violinist Joshua Bell playing the music of James Horner (hear the soundtrack on Freegal). The movie highlights the youthfulness of these two literary figures contrasted with the challenges faced when dealing with aging and the onset of alzheimer's disease. I have to admit I did hope to learn a bit more about the writings of both of these significant authors, but in viewing this beautifully made movie I just mostly found inspiration to do more reading and research into their lives together and work as writers. The good new is, the library has a number of works by both of these authors. Including the books this movie was based off of. to choose which novel and/or biographical work to start with? I think The Bell by Iris Murdoch and Elegy for Iris by John Bayley.

Excellent movie on aging and Alzheimer.

Recommend this for the library "Notable" DVD shelf because society needs to be aware of the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer if they ever meet an affected person. This will help with etiquette in helping the person.

The acting is great, but it made me very uncomfortable. To see how Alzheimers affects the life of a woman whose life and self-identity centered around thought was very painful to watch.

I love Judi Dench. But this film had no depth. Yes people get old - even famous people, even brilliant people. And people lose their minds, their memory and it is sad. But I would have liked to have been told the whole story of her life not just the end with a few snipets from her youth. Very disappointing.

Although I enjoyed this movie, it was not memorable. Good performances by all.
