I knew nothing about this film except that it's from the Criterion Collection, which usually means it will be worth a look. As I watched, I asked myself is this a comedy? A portrait of an old section of Sicily? A view of Italians in their old age? A Joke about the mafia? If you can, watch it without reading about it before watching it. Then you can learn what is going on just as the protagonist learns what is going on.

Alberto Sordi is amazing in this comic turn on the Mafia. A marvelously told tale.
