Local author. Quick read. Delightful characters. Interesting plot. While my high school English teacher would have loved the profusion of similes, I found them annoying and distracting.

Quite far outside my usual reads but rather delightful. Quick warm and a little bit delicious!

A cozy and comforting winter read

This is a book so reminiscent of Joanne Harris's Chocolat, in tone and feel, I was just delighted. It contains the same elements - long descriptive passages lovingly devoted to food and wine, concentration on love and life as experienced through food, and some pixie dust tossed in to let it all end on the upside. If you are looking for a realistic, fast paced, gritty item, The School is most definitely not for you. If you are looking for a warm, cozy, pour-a-glass-of wine curl up book - this is a good choice.

This book is about so much more than a cooking class, of course. Bauermeister's prose is luscious to read and the characters' stories made me alternately cry and laugh. You can open to any page in the book and find amazing excerpts:
"from the bottle into the espresso, lingering there lazy and relaxed, two ounces of secrets waiting in the bottom of a bowl the size of his hand."
"While the egg yolks cooled, he directed the beaters at the egg whites, setting the mixer on a high speed that sent small bubbles giggling to the side of the bowl. . . "
This book is replete with wonderful descriptions of lives, loves, and food.

I like how the author relates food and cooking to various student's lives. The characters were interesting and diverse.

When I started reading, I was not anticipating this book world break reach character into a short story, effectively a profile of each student. Fun, quick read.

An enjoyable read. A cooking class at Lillian's restaurant brings out many memories for all participants, some good and not so good. But, there is healing and resolution. Each character is added to the story like ingredients to a recipe. There is a sequel--The Lost Art of Mixing.

Introduces several characters and develops them just enough to leave you with incomplete and hanging story lines. You want success and love and hope for the characters but this book leaves you questioning.

Un petit bijou de livre. Je l'ai également écouté (livre audio) et je l'ai référé maintes fois à de la clientèle biblio. et/ou autres qui l'ont tous adoré comme moi.

"In this remarkable debut, Bauermeister creates a captivating world where the pleasures and particulars of sophisticated food come to mean much more than simple epicurean indulgence...Delivering memorable story lines and characters while seducing the senses, Bauermeister's tale of food and hope is certain to satisfy." "The School of Essential Ingredients is a delicate, meltingly lovely hymn to food and friendship...You'll want to tuck yourself into one warm corner of it and stay all day." MARISA DE LOS SANTOS, author of Love Walked In and Belong to Me
