Des Howell is a former rock 'n' roll star who never leaves his secluded oceanfront mansion. He subsists on a steady diet of whisky, pharmaceuticals and jelly doughnuts and occassionally works on his whale music. I'm giving this 4 stars for its charm and wit, and because I love rock n roll novels. A solid and enteraining read, even if it seems to fall apart a little toward the very end, as Quarrington speeds to an inevitable, predictable (but still satisfying) dénouement.
