Add a CommentMany extraordinary photographs (though, interestingly, there were none of queens) and enthusiasm in every paragraph. The varieties of ant societies were explained without getting bogged down in jargon; species included one where they kidnap babies (pupae) in order to enslave them (the amazon ant) and the extraordinary ant world war in California, were the two most interesting parts for me. Extensive notes and index.
Slaves? Spies? War across continents? Everything you didn't know about the world's most successful superorganisms.
Normally, I don’t care too much for personal anecdotes in science literature. However, Moffett’s descriptions of his travels and experiences with both humans and animals, and their environments, add layers to the narrative which make for a very interesting read. I definitely learned new things about the ant world and truly enjoyed the pictures in this book.
Extremely interesting. I had no idea that ants are such amazing creatures. I now watch them with a whole new perspective, even though I studied them closely as a small child in my back yard.
