A survey of red sea urchin populations was conducted near Campbell River (Pacific Fisheries Management, PFM sub-areas 13-1, 13-2 and 14-13) during July/August, 2002. A total of 54 transects were surveyed by SCUBA divers, and 5246 red sea urchins were measured. Estimated mean densities (number/m²) and biomass (g/m²) were significantly higher for red sea urchins found inside (26 transects) compared to outside (28 transects) previously fished commercial bed areas; densities were also compared by depth.
