The purpose of this paper is to set the context to initiate planning with health authorities & other key stakeholders to address healthy ageing for seniors in British Columbia. It presents evidence that will lead to the development of an evidence-based framework for a comprehensive approach to optimize the opportunities & meet the challenges presented by an ageing population. Sections of the paper cover the following: the current & projected age distribution of the provincial population; demographic characteristics of the aged population; utilization of the health system by seniors; the components of healthy ageing; strategies & principles of healthy ageing; Ministry of Health strategic developments and their integration with healthy ageing initiatives; and the role of the Ministry & partners in a healthy ageing strategy. Appendices review evidence related to five priority issues identified as crucial to healthy ageing: healthy eating, injury prevention, physical activity, cessation of tobacco use, and social connectedness.
