Yet another enjoyable installment in the Pink Carnation series. This is the first book since the series-opener to be set in France, which made for a nice change of pace, and while I was initially uncertain about the fact that this was the first time one or both of the protagonists weren't recurring minor characters from previous installments, I still liked this one quite a bit. As ever, Willig excels at balancing romance and intrigue, and writes two memorable, well-matched lead characters.

Another title in the "Pink Carnation" series. Post revolutionary France in the time of Buonaparte is fraught with danger. Our latest spy from the Selwick spy school is "The Silver Orchid" and alias for Laura Grey, a governess seeking excitement in her life. A plot to put a Prince of the blood back on the throne is discovered and the chase is on. This is the 8th in the series and there are subsequent titles too.

Laura always wanted a much more exciting life than being a governness. It figures that she would then end up as a governness in France, spying for the Pink Carnation. But what she didn‘t count on was falling in love with her target. Which complicates things immensily, especially when she has to help him and his family flee from Paris. Can she get them to safety without blowing her cover and endangering the Pink Carnation‘s carefully constructed network.

Good installment of the series, but we are facing diminising returns here. She needs to dial up the “naughtiness“, realizing this is some of her audiences

Loved this book. Willig has a way of making historical romance feel like Jane Austen meets great historical fiction. Paris is the backdrop this time (prior book in the series is set in India) and it gives a real sense of the political intrigue throughout the world at the time (as viewed from a British perspective).
