But when she and her new next-door neighbor, Ellen Cogsdill, uncover a woman's hand in a sand hazard during a golf game, her life is changed. As if that isn't enough excitement for one day, Paula learns that the thirteen-year-old granddaughter she didn't know existed, Laurie Shuler, is coming to spend the summer. Laurie settles in with ease. making friends with the two cats, Mum-mum and Carioca, but alarms her grandmother with her interest in the recent murder. After Laurie makes friends with twelve-year-old Josh Cogsdill, the two begin an amateurish investigation. It seems that Kamiak Hills residents have a number of scandalous secrets, including an anonymouse letter-writer and possibly a blackmailer. Ignoring warnings that their snooping could be dangerous, the two are knocked into a ditch by a hit-and-run driver. Laurie remembers a large, silver-colored car, but feels there was something else she should be recalling.
