It is a time of both splendor and despair for the deeply divided French nation where the self-serving King Louis XIV enjoys the riches of the world while his people starve. Believing he is all-powerful, Louis fears no one -- except the one person who could bring an end to his absolute power: the man he condemned to wear an iron mask and imprisoned for life. But when the king's selfish excesses go too far, retired Musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis vow to free the mysterious prisoner who may be France's only hope for survival. Only one question remains: will their old comrade, the legendary d'Artagnan help them -- or destroy them?

Yow. Forget the 3 Musketeers part. (Go grab the real/specific story on that <i.e. w/King Louie XIII, etc.>, and a candy bar while you're at it. : )
If you want to see this story, try and find a copy of the TV movie made in 1977. (Or the 1939 film.)

This is easily the best three musketeers ever made, to me, in that trouble is taken with the characters, who are better differentiated, and each with as interesting a history as I have ever seen. The love interest and the extent to which the plot is persuasively driven by love,
Even Jeremy Irons, never a favourite actor of mine, cuts a dashing figure. Malkovitch, who I think highly about, acquits himself well, as does Depardieu, in a life-loving, comical

For all my praise this still has many of the dazzle and exuberance of a film for 14-year-olds ...and rightly. After all, what is the story of a bad king who is replaced with a good one who is identical to him in all but having a heart?
DiCaprio acquits himself well in two very disparate, though a bit thin roles, and Gabriel Byrne smoulders with feeling, as ever.
The settings are either very elaborately reproduced from some original models, or this was filmed in versailles itself and in the very rooms and times where the action presumably took place.

Wow this is the worst movie EVER. it should be under comedy it is that bad. all the acting is terrible, like they are trying to hard to be dramatic. And the whole "I am your father" plot twist was so stupid and cheesy. don't waste your time. also the fact that some of the actors adopted french accents and others heavy american ones was so bad!

Portarys France's history very well about Louis 14th, who was rude and crude, selfish and deprived his people of their basic necessities. Although this movie takes another approach and goes towards one of the conspiracy theories about why Louis 14th all of a sudden became so nice to his people and stopped acting like an arrogant jerk. Jeremy Irons and Leonardo DiCaprio perform really well in this movie and put themselves in their characters to make it seem real.

Recently saw this again on TV. Had forgotten what a good cast was involved, and how early in "Leo's" career this was. (Fortunately, his skill has matured with age.) As usual, European locales are enjoyable to see.
