Members of the New Magini String Quartet are disappearing. Is the first violinist in Peru, where their most recent concert took place? Jacobus and his friend, Nathaniel, talk to police in Lima, Peru, and search records of members of the quartet. Nothing seems to complete the puzzle. After a multimedia concert, in which Jacobus and Nathaniel substitute for missing members of the quartet, the violist is dead and Yumi, the second violinist, has disappeared. Is membership in this quartet a death sentence? The theme of the music plays a large part in this plot, and Jacobus' bulldog, of very little brain, plays a small part. Can all the parts come together before Yumi, the last member of the quartet, dies?
