Mount Kailas is the most sacred of the world's mountains - holy to one fifth of humanity. Beyond the central Himalayas, claimed to be the source of the universe, its summit has never been scaled, but for centuries it has been ritually circled by Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. Colin Thubron joins these pilgrims, after a trek from Nepal. He talks to villagers and to monks in their decaying monasteries; he tells the stories of exiles and of eccentric explorers from the West.

A beautifully written and informative travelogue of the author's venture to Mt. Kailas on the Nepalese/Tibetan border. His descriptions verge on the poetic, and it is easy to see from his descriptions why many people believed in a virtually inaccessible earthly paradise (Shangri-La) in this area. Although Mt. Kailas is remote and about 20,000 ft high, it is a destination for thousands of religious pilgrims because of its proximity to the source of 4 of India's major rivers. Thubron gives valuable insight into the religious significance of the mountain, the history of the region, and the conflicts between the traditional Tibetan culture and the often oppressive Chinese government.
