The latest in the fledgling oral history genre (other recent entries include books about MTV, SNL and ESPN) is a must read for any NW music fan. Put together by Mark Yarm (no relationship to the Mudhoney guitarist), this entertaining, thorough and sometimes tragic history will trigger nostalgia in those of us who were around in the early 90s and will be informative for the kids who wonder what the grunge craze was all about. Yarm gives ample space to the big bands (Nirvana, P. Jam, Soundgarden), but also does an admirable job of letting bands that were overshadowed, but influential (Mudhoney, Melvins, TAD)get their stories out too. And, yes, Courtney Love comes across as a not a very likable person. So break out your flannel, crank your old Sub Pop records up to 11, grab your heroin (no, don't) and enjoy.

A must read if you are into 90's alternative (grunge) music.
