It is the story of a young circus performer, the crime of passion that shatters his soul, and the macabre journey back to the world of his armless mother, deaf-mute lover, and murder. It is an odyssey of ecstasy and anguish, belief and blasphemy, beauty and madness.

What did I just watch? As the film progressed I felt it become more stranger and irritating than otherwise. I was not compelled by any of the scenes or characters, and the music and mono sound quality made it that much worse.

Insane masterpiece ~420

As with most of Jodorowsky's work, this is far more than a mere cult film or some random trippiness. Yes, it is both of those things, but you owe it to yourself to not leave it at that and investigate further.

Loaded with tons of religious and psycho-mystic symbolism and visual metaphors, it's a real treat for the mind to analyze.

This film in particular has a strong Oedipal complex motif.

GOOD 1989 slice of Jodorowsky - it's (for some reason) a bit over my head - I can appreciate the filmography, acting, etc. but it's too much of a midnight movie.

Classic !!!! insane and beautiful ~420

Definitely not a movie for everyone but an odd and strangely haunting cult classic movie. The films begins with a surreal Felliniesque circus in Mexico where a young boy lives with his knife throwing father and his trapeze mother who is a cult leader watching their tumultuous and violent relationship. The later part with the grown boy resembles campy B/W horrors movies from the silent era and 30s-40s like The Hands of Orlac where he is under the sway of his dangerous mother. Kind of strange and trippy but if you like that kind of movie it is probably one of the better ones to watch.

An original NC-17 rated creepy cult film with great music, circus characters and suspenseful plot. And reminded me of Poe’s imaginative horror stories and Tarantino’s full throttle graphic images. Amazing psychological drama with sparse dialogue … As Dr Freud said blame it on the mother.

7.7/10 IMDb
85% Rotten Tomatoes

Visually cool, but otherwise inane, trippy film from Alejandro "El Topo" Jodorowsky. Released in 1989. More entertaining is the documentary about how Jodorowsky did not get to make "Dune."

The opening song: El fin del mundo (End of the world is coming)
El fin del mundo se acerca ya
The end of the world approaches already
Toda esperanza se acabará
All hope will finish
Ya las señales se están cumpliendo
The signals are already being fulfilled
Se están cumpliendo como escrito está
They are being fulfilled as written is
Querido amigo, Lirio te llama
Dear friend, Iris calls you
No hagas duro tu corazón
Do not make your heart hard
Ríndete a Lirio, dale tu alma
Surrender to Iris, give your soul
Y tendrás parte en la resurrección
And you will have part in the resurrection
