The Emerald Storm --- by William Dietrich. --- Dietrich, as usual in his Ethan Gage Adventures, spins a most engaging tale of adventure full of deceit and double dealing, full of despair and hope, full of suspense and adventure. This time Napoleon sends our rakish hero, Ethan Gage, on a mission to Haiti to retrieve his wife, Astiza and Son, Harry; to gauge if the French can hold their rebellious colony on the island of Hispanola; and finally to retrieved long buried treasure of gold and diamonds and vehicles which will allow Napoleon, at last, to invade Britain. In spite of a pre-occupation with the pleasures of the flesh, Ethan, none the less, accomplishes his mission in a manner of speaking Here he follows a pattern of denouement that we’ve seen in the other Gage novels. But at the end of the novel, author Dietrich commits an unforgivable wrong. I’ll leave it to you to figure out what that might be. Like all the Gage books, this one is much too short. You’ve barely picked it up and you’ve arrived at the last page. Sure hope Dietrich has crafted the next installment.

Ethan Gage is enjoyable. As far as literary characters go I consider him a friend. right up there with Cotton Malone, Charlie Parker and Aloysius Pendergast
