A well-received novel but a big disappointment. Poor character development - lots of pop psych to feign insight into behavior but little actual substance conveyed. Much too much flashback that became very annoying; it only served to flesh out the size of the book, not add to the story and often at inappropriate times.

First & last read by this author for me.

After reading the synopsis of this book, I had great expectation, but was very disappointed with the book.

This book is a lyrical and thoughtful portrait of the currents that pull apart, and pull together, a family in
Florida. Don't expect action-packed thrill rides. Expect to experience emotion.

This is one of those books where the synopsis on the back of the book is better than the actual novel. The whole book is infected with unending boring details about baking. If you like baking you might enjoy it but it's supposed to be about a 13 year old child who runs away from home. The author uses a lot of different languages with no translation or meaning of the words.

Usually like this author. Read this one fairly long ago and my new disabllity keeps me from recalling why I liked this book. But I know I did.
