Daughter of a controlling mother, Elizabeth finally let loose one night, drinking at a nightclub and allowing a strange man's seductive Russian accent lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive. The events that followed changed her life forever. Twelve years later, the woman known as Abigail Lowery lives on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance programmer, she designs sophisticated security systems--and supplements her own security with a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. But Abigail's reserve only intrigues police chief Brooks Gleason. Her logical mind, her secretive nature, and her unromantic viewpoints leave him fascinated but frustrated. He suspects that Abigail needs protection from something--and that her elaborate defenses hide a story that must be revealed.

This is the first time I have read a Nora Roberts book and it won't be the last. Adding her to my list of favorite authors with only reading this one book.
In response to another comment yes it would make a great movie.

Oh yes indeed, I liked this book but that should not come as much of a surprise. Nora Roberts is my go-to-girl for writing Moral Dilemma with a 360 degree view. I did this one as book-on-tape and am very pleased I did, I like the narrating actress who brought both the main characters alive with charm and a great deal of Southern grace. This story about a socially-stinted, genius IQ teen, who is in Harvard Medical School at 16...opens up with that bite into the apple of rebellion when she can no longer stand not being heard or seen, and does not seem to matter. She takes a rather typical departure into the "I am going to do it MY way" arena...with immediate and devastating, life-changing results. Add in fake IDs, Russian Mafia, first kisses, standard police issue glocks, a purple sweater, a bad-ass dog, and a JohnDenver type chief of police who just cannot say no to cherry pie with a side of vanilla bean ice cream. It is a story about the lengths one might go to be safe and how one can go from desperately wanting to be seen to wanting to disappear like a used rainbow after a storm. Nora, per usual, does an awesome job illustrating what it can look like to plant a seed of trust and nurture it into a beanstalk. I LOVE these characters, their interaction, and the way the chief handles the girls heart. I find this review a bit wandery, sorry....and realize it is because I am reluctant to tell you anything that happens, this is a fun one for you to unfold yourself. The ABC of the story is pretty simple, the ramifications chronic. A good solid fast read with a "no cheaters here" ending.

Unlike some, I can't claim to be a huge Nora Roberts fan. I really liked listening to THE SEARCH however, so I wanted to listen to this one. I am really glad I did. This is an EXCELLENT book. Well written and well read. Most men would probably be as interested in this story as women; it's that interesting. For some the language could be a little rough in parts, but I wasn't too bothered by it.

A big fan, but this book is one of the best that she's put out in years.
