111 West Coast Literary Portraits by Barry Peterson and Blaise Enright, features stunning black & white portraits of emerging, mid-career and well-known writers who live (and died) in BC, along with excerpts of text by each writer.

Photographers, Barry Peterson and Blaise Enright began documenting writers in their home environment in 1998. Included in the book are; Alice Munro, Joy Kogawa, Bill Deverell, Gurjinder Basran, Phyllis Webb, Roy Miki, P.K. Page, Greg Scofield, Wade Compton, Ronald Wright, Jack Hodgins, Evelyn Lau, the late Jane Rule, Al Purdy, Eric Nicol, Robin Blaser and many more. Peterson and Enrights rare photographs became part of a travelling show titled Lit Happens that was exhibited at the Vancouver International Writers Festival, The Pendulum Gallery, Word on the Street, BC Book Prizes, SFU Reckoning Conference, Comox Valley Art Gallery, BC Hydro, and the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts. In 111 West Coast Literary Portraits, all photographs have been taken with B&W film and printed as fibre-based archivally processed prints, a time-consuming process that is used very rarely in this instant and disposable digital age. Peterson says, Film photos have a depth to them that digital cant duplicate.

Heritage Books

111 West Coast Literary Portraits by Barry Peterson and Blaise Enright features rare portraits of emerging, midcareer and well-known writers who have lived in B.C., accompanied by excerpts of their writing. In 1997 Barry Peterson and Blaise Enright became obsessively curious about the characters behind the novels and poetry written by British Columbian authors and began photographing them. They travelled the Coast and Gulf Islands for 6 years seeking the famous and infamous. They shot over 50 portraits in black and white to contrast the colourful nature of each writer and to minimize visual distraction from the "character" of each. They took pictures of writers in their personal space, where they were less inhibited, resulting in intimate portraits of B.C.'s best, most honoured, as well as emerging, literary talent. Introduction by Alan Twigg.
