Good mix of stories. they are not professional travel writers and some were more boring/emotional than others, but overall kept my attention

Most authors were not travel writers and their stories seemed either forced or dull.

Was expecting better travel writing but these are not travel writers but people sharing personal experiences. Some more interesting than others but a demonstration of how hard it is to write travel fiction.

Travel. What does it mean? Is it going to the National Parks in the rear of my parent's station wagon? Well. yeah... What about sunny Hawaii? Yes again.. What about a job in Antarctica? Yes again!

In reality the concept of travel encompasses so much more than just 'vacation' that we look forward to two weeks out of every year. Each of the over thirty stories that make up this book explore destination as varied as an ice bound camp in Alaska to Tahiti. You travel along with the travel guides (instead of writers) who bring you along as a passenger on their jaunts.
The stories are incredibly different as befits the idea of travel. You might not love every place you visit.

You need a sense of adventure to travel You don't just want the same old thing. But it's still fun to go.Experience the unexpected. I'm glad I did!

"Would you like to take a few short trips with literate, observant guides? Have we got the book for you! In Better than Fiction, acclaimed fiction writers such as DBC Pierre, Joyce Carol Oates, Charles Finch, Alexander McCall Smith, Nikki Gemmell, Téa Obreht, and 25 others "describe their most meaningful non-fictional journeys." The evocative essays in this gem of a book take readers everywhere from popular tourist locales (Mexico, Rome) to unexpected places (a prison cell in San Quentin), and many points in between. If you love both travelling and reading about writers, this engaging, diverse collection should be on your must-read list." February 2012 Armchair Travel newsletter
