Set in lower Manhattan in 1871, this novel follows the life of Moth, whose father abandoned her as a child. At 12, her mother sells her into servitude, thrusting Moth into the sordid world of the Bowery-- where she must weigh the price she's willing to pay for independence.

I enjoyed the historical look at New York. Ami McKay portrayed the city, its attitudes and its society & standards really well.
However, I found the characters rather 2-dimensional. They seemed like wooden puppets that pushed the story along but brought no warmth or depth with them.
