I started watching "SNL" in the late 80s and I was always interested in whom they chose for their musical guests. Two acts that totally confused my teenage brain were the Pogues and Fishbone. Formed in L.A. in the late 70s and still active, Fishbone played an un-classifiable mix of punk, funk, ska, metal, and R&B. This documentary, narrated by Laurence Fishburne, tells the story of the band, from their origins to their brush with fame to their current status as a touring band playing to small audiences. They seemed poised for stardom and nobody can quite figure out what happened, aside from some internal disputes and that not everyone could figure out their sound and image. Where they a black rock band who was funky? Were they a funk band who also liked punk? The movie, which features commentary from musicians like Flea (the Red Hot Chilli Peppers sound owes a lot to them), No Doubt, Ice-T, and Questlove, is both inspiring and depressing. Many of the interviews are with the two key members, charismatic (and pretty nutty) frontman Angelo Moore and founding bassist Norwood Fisher. The film is named after their most popular song.
