Fascinating quotes from diaries and letters give readers a view behind the scenes.

This work is a stunning masterpiece. It is non-fiction but I still hesitate to "give away" parts of it. Just read it. Learn how close WWII came to not ending in 1945. The Red army daily committed horrible atrocities in the territory it overran but without them the war would have continued for years or even been successfully concluded for the Axis powers. It seems there is no honour in war, or concluding a war, only more and more brutality. Dobbs also shows us how the cold war got started, but to me the main sobering fact was how much the world sadly owes to thugs killing other thugs (or was it slaves killing other slaves - both controlled by thuggish regimes?)
