"Shakespeare's restless world is a wonderfully informative and enthralling exploration of William Shakespeare's era that accompanies the BBC Radio 4 series. A pivotal period in human history, the New World was discovered during Shakespeare's time and life was exhilaratingly uncertain. In this thrilling hardback, MacGregor looks at 20 objects from Shakespeare's life and times and uncovers the fascinating stories behind them all. Ranging from the grand (such as the hoard of gold coins that make up the Salcombe treasure) to the humble (worn garments of an unknown pedlar), the objects allow MacGregor to explore issues as diverse as piracy and Islam, Catholicism and disguise." --Publisher description.

A very interesting book about the things in Shakespeare's time and place and the culture they were a part of. Its more about English culture in the late 1500's and early 1600's, but a book like that probably wouldn't be able to be sold on its own, so Shakespeare had to be integrated into it. Which in turn raises the question: what other times and places are there that can be as well written about but aren't because those other times and places lack a Shakespeare (or some other major draw)?

Wonderful collection of interesting items from Shakespeare's world. Each bite-size chapter was entertaining as well as educational. Highly recommend this to high school students struggling with the plays and understanding why they were and remain so popular.
