Charmed Pie # 1

Loved this cute cozy mystery from local author Ellery Adams. The story is really fun and engaging, and the second book is even better. The fantasy aspect of the story is my favorite part, and I can’t wait to follow that storyline throughout the series. My one complaint is a common one I have for cozies—just not developed enough. I think if it was about 50 pages longer we could’ve gotten a lot more plot and character development. I think that’s just a product of the genre’s demands—short and published as quickly as possible. Some authors for these genre mass markets are contracting for like four books per year—can you imagine writing and editing a complete novel in 3 months? The stories in this series are pretty ambitious for a 270 page mass market paperback, so they naturally end up being a little rushed, but still enjoyable for a light read.

Just finished reading, enjoyed the magical end of things and how Ella Mae solved the mystery.

I really enjoyed the magic and mystery of this one. I liked all the characters and the mystery/murder put an exciting spin on things. I look forward to the next book.

A pleasant mystery with magical overtones. The fact that Ella Mae bakes emotions and feelings in her pies reminds me a bit of "Like Water for Chocolate" (but not as complex or well-written). This is the kind of light reading I enjoy when I need a break from the rest of my life.

A formula mystery. I didn't much like the main character, who relied on everyone around her to take care of her rather than solving her own problems. And don't read this if you are dieting, there is eating or baking on just about every few pages (there are a few pie recipes at the back, and they sound delicious). I doubt I will read another book by this author.

Love that southern humor.
