Young Nassali longs to read and write like her brother, but since her mothers death, Nassali is responsible for looking after her younger siblings and running the household. There is no time for books and learning. Then one day, she wakes up to discover that her chores have been taken care of. It is her first gift day. From that day on, once a week, her brother gives Nassali the gift of time so that she can pursue her dream of an education, just as her mother would have wanted.

Gift Days. 2012 Nassali, a motherless Ugandan girl, longs to go to school like her older brother but must spend her days caring for her younger siblings. Her brother, Motoovu decides to give her the best gift ever: one day each week he gets up extra early to do all the chores and spend time teaching his little sister to read and write. The author includes a glossary and information about organizations such as the Stephen Lewis Foundation that help real girls like Nassali receive an education.
