In a small Ugandan village, Kato wakes early to start the long, barefoot trek beyond his village and along fields dotted with cattle and guarded by soldiers. His destination is the village well, where he will pump a day's supply of water into two jerry cans. But this is no ordinary day. The aid-worker's truck has come to the village square, and in the back is a gift so special, the little boy rushes home to look for something to repay the aid-worker.

Thank you, Ms. Fullerton, for telling our children about life in a regular Ugandan village. My students didn't realize this was "real" life and that there could be soldiers guarding the cattle, a truck bringing shoes and one well to get all water!

We liked this book because it was hard not to yawn while listening to the story- mom yawned lots during this story- we liked all the things that the boy did to not yawn and he went to bed anyways!
