As a chef and a runner, I found this to be an interesting read all the way through. Recipes end every chapter; he discusses food choices for races, for a vegan diet, and he also describes his training. The ultramarathon community is portrayed as a large collection of close-knit friendships and crazy characters.

It is about Scott Jurek and he describes in the book that he was nobody, had tough childhood and became an elite runner. He is the most famous for winning western states 7 times in a row. He mentions about his running, life struggles and his diet; how and why a meat eater from Minnesota became vegan. For someone interested in cooking, he includes some of his vegan recipes in this book. This book is very inspiring specially in terms of running; running 100 miles and longer.

If you read Chris McDougall's BORN TO RUN and enjoyed it, then you'll enjoy Scott Jurek's book as well. A vegan manifesto but also an honest portrait of normal existential travails -- familial dysfunction, marital woes, alienation from a best friend. The book ends with Jurek's account of his positively super-heroic effort at the Greek Spartathlon Ultra Race. Those chapters alone make the book worthwhile reading. Read this book!

Perhaps there is a cult following to this man; this book, however, is badly written and offers little.

This is book is truly inspiring. I picked it up because it showed up as vegan reading when I did an online search...I'm normally not into 'athlete' reads. I was totally surprised by the content and I'm glad that I now have an awareness of who Scott Jurek is and his perspective on running and life.

Great inspiring book. If only Jurek wasn't so adamantly vegan. After two years of running my body into the ground while being vegan I know for me this diet is not sustainable the way it seems to be for Scott. If only Tim Olsen had a book like this I think the low carb paleo perspective would be great alternative view to this. Still this book will get you motivated to go out and run!

The chili recipe turned out well, I will make it again. I will probably try more of his recipes. I like how he sees part of his success due to his vegan diet not in spite of it.

Really interesting book - and not what I expected when I heard that it is by a vegan ultramarathoner. He grew up hunting & fishing, for food for his family, and became vegan as he found it helped him with his running. There isn't a training plan in this book, he just talks about what works for him and says you should find what works for you.
